About Hospice & Palliative Care
★What is Hospice ? Hospice is a way of living with comfort, dignity, hope and support during advanced illness. Hospice provides services to patients and their families, wherever their home is.
★What is Palliative Care ? "Palliate” means to ease, and our focus is to ease the suffering that results from illness. Supportive and palliative care provides treatment for your symptoms, even when the disease cannot be cured. Our main goals are to relieve your pain, other discomfort and to reduce your family’s stress. We also provide information to help you live with serious physical illness. We consider emotional, social, and spiritual needs as well. During your illness, supportive and palliative care can help you to determine personal treatment goals and choose among treatment options.
★Does hospice/Palliative care mean giving up hope ? No. With Hospice, hope involves helping the patient to live as comfortably and fully as possible, despite the illness.
★How soon should hospice/Palliative care be considered ? The patient and their family can make the best use of hospice resources when an early referral is made. Serious problems like pain can be addressed and hospitalization can be avoided.
★Who is Eligible for Hospice/Palliative care ? Any person with a life-threatening or advanced illness, including cancer, ALS, AIDS, Alzheimer’s Disease or end-stage cardiac, lung, liver, neurological, or renal disease may be eligible for Hospice/Palliative Care.
★Who Pays for Hospice/Palliative Care ?
Hospice/Palliative is covered by Medicare, Medicaid and most other insurances. Admission is based on patient need, rather than on their ability to pay.
★What if the patient improves ? It is not unusual for a patient to improve after admission to hospice, in which case discharge from hospice can be considered. Hospice/Palliative care staff then helps the family with plans for alternative services.
★ What if the patient decides to pursue more aggressive or curative treatment for their illness ? Every patient has the option of discontinuing hospice at any time. He or she may always return to hospice/palliative care, if needed.
